Mumbai – Major Indian indices rose on Monday on strong Asian markets and lower oil prices. 1,905 shares advanced and 1,424 shares declined in the Mumbai Stock Exchange.

The BSE Sensex rose 1.07% to 60,598 at 11:15 am on Monday. The Nifty50 index rose 0.99% to 17,962. Mahindra & Mahindra, Sun Pharmaceuticals and Ultratech Cement Company shares were the top gainers on the Sensex. While Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, NTPC Limited and Tata Steel were down.

Related sector stocks led by Mahindra & Mahindra’s gain of over 3% led by BSE Auto toppers helped propel the market. Steel and real estate stocks were market laggards. While BSE Information Technology and BSE Telecom all rose more than 1%.

Falling crude oil prices and a bullish trend in the domestic market helped the rupee gain against the US dollar in early trade. India’s foreign exchange reserves fell in the week ended October 21 as the Reserve Bank of India continued to protect the rupee from further decline.

On October 28, the Reserve Bank of India announced a 231 basis point hike in the interest rate on the Government’s Floating Rate Bond 2034 to 7.69% per annum.
