Mumbai – Major Indian indices opened the week higher after optimism in Asian markets and decline in crude oil prices. The indices then started to trade steady, paring their initial gains. 2,042 shares rose and 1,238 shares declined in the Mumbai Stock Exchange. The advance-decline ratio was still in favor of the advance.

Shares in consumer goods, energy and auto sectors supported the market. While BSE Technology, BSE Healthcare declined significantly. Orient Green Power Company’s gain of over 5% helped make the BSE Commodity Index the top gainer.

Banking stocks caught the attention of investors. The BSE Bankex rallied nearly 1% as shares of Bank of Baroda rose more than 8%. State Bank of India, the top Sensex gainer, also gained 4%. Despite volatility in major indexes, each broad market rose more than half a percent.

The BSE Sensex rose 0.03% to 60,970 at 10:40 am on Monday. The Nifty50 index rose 0.15% to 18,143. State Bank of India, Power Grid Corporation of India and Tata Steel were the top gainers in the Sensex. Asian Paints, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Sun Pharmaceuticals were the decliners.
