After Twitter, Meta and Microsoft, now preparation for layoffs in Amazon, plans to lay off 10,000 people this week


New Delhi: The process of layoffs continues in the world’s largest companies. The US-based technology and e-commerce giant has begun to scale down its non-profit initiatives amid a growing economic slowdown. The New York Times reported on Monday, citing people with knowledge of the matter, that Amazon.com Inc. plans to lay off about 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs as early as this week. According to the report, the cuts will be focused on the e-commerce giant’s device unit, which includes voice-assistant Alexa, as well as its retail division and human resources.

According to media reports, as of December 31 last year, Amazon had approximately 1,608,000 full-time and part-time employees. Amazon has joined a group of US companies that are going to lay off their workforce in a big way to prepare for a possible economic downturn. Last week, Facebook (Meta) said it would cut more than 11,000 jobs, or 13% of its workforce, to reduce costs.

Jamie Zhang, an employee working in Amazon, claimed in a post on LinkedIn that the company had fired him. It was written in this post that pink slip was given to the entire robotics team. According to LinkedIn data, Amazon’s robotics team has at least 3766 employees. In the post, Zhang wrote that our entire robotics team is gone. However, it is not confirmed as to how many of these 3766 employees have been laid off.

hiring freeze
Amazon recently announced the hiring freeze. The company had said in an internal memo that it would stop this hiring in view of the economic conditions. According to Beth Galetti, senior vice president of People Experience and Technology at the company, the hiring freeze will last for a few months. “We expect to keep the hiring freeze in place for the next few months,” Galetti said.
