New Delhi: A new SIM card rule has been brought by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The government has introduced a new SIM card rule with the aim of preventing bank fraud through SIM cards. DoT has ordered all telecom companies to implement the new rule within 15 days. Under the new rule, DoT has directed telecom companies Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL and MTNL to stop the incoming and outgoing SMS facility for 24 hours after the new SIM is activated.

Because of this the government brought a new rule
At present, SIM swap fraud is increasing rapidly. In such a situation, some hackers or fraud people take duplicate SIM of other people and access OTP etc. from it and can put a dent in the bank account. Fraudsters contact the telecom operator and buy a new SIM, which is already being used by those users. It is a process similar to buying a new SIM. In case of upgrade in the years 2016 and 2018, DoT had asked to follow a process for issue of new SIM, so that the customer can be identified. After this, a new process has been included to take the new SIM of the old number and activate it and the customer can also be verified.

These orders were given to telecom companies
DoT ordered telecom companies to send an SMS to the customer’s old number within 24 hours after the new SIM is activated, asking whether a request for a new SIM or an upgrade has been placed on their behalf. If the customer declines the request for a new SIM, the new SIM will not be activated.
