Reliance Industries has won the contract to build the country’s first Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Chennai.
This park, being built on 184.25 acres, will be given for a concession period of 45 years. It is believed that it will handle 71.7 lakh metric tonnes of cargo. The Transport Ministry plans to build 35 such parks across the country under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. With this, various economic zones will be linked with multimodal connectivity. The ministry has kept 15 such parks in its priority list for the next three years.

National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) chief executive Prakash Gaur told ET that the next number is of Bangalore MMLP. Bidding for this is to be done by December. The contract will be awarded in December itself. Gaur said that the bid for Nagpur MMLP would be invited in December and the contract would be awarded in January 2023. The bids for Indore MMLP will be invited in January and the contract will be awarded in March. NHLHL is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to develop Logistics Parks.
Multimodal hubs will pave the way for large infrastructure to be built on PPP mode in the country. The central and state governments have come together for this. NHLML, Rail Vikas Nigam, Chennai Port Authority and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation have formed an SPV for the Chennai MMLP. For this, a 5.4 km long four-lane national highway will be built. Its cost will be Rs 104 crore. Along with this, a new rail siding of 10.5 km long will be built. It is expected to cost Rs 217 crore. Gaur said foreign companies have also shown interest in the upcoming projects.
