MumbaiIndian benchmark indices started flat on the first trading day of the new year. But it went up sharply in a short time due to metal stocks. Tata Steel and SAIL saw gains of over 2% today. That is why it was the best performing sector in the BSE Metal index. BSE Commodities and BSE Telecom, both experienced significant gains, while BSE Healthcare and BSE IT were the only sectors to decline.

At 11:20 am on Monday, the BSE Sensex rose 0.47% to 61,129. The Nifty 50 index rose 0.45% to reach the level of 18,186. On Sensex, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank and Tata Motors were top gainers, while Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Finserv were top losers.

Looking at the advance-decline ratio on the BSE, 2,310 stocks advanced and 1,112 declined. This means that the advance decline ratio strongly favors the gainers. The Broader Indices outperformed the Major Indices. Shares of BSE’s top smallcap gainer BF Investment Ltd gained ground and locked in 20% upper circuit, keeping small-cap bulls busy.

Looking at other developments, the growth in eight core sectors of the country has increased to 5.4% in November from 3.2% in the same month of the previous financial year. Retail inflation for industrial workers declined from 6.08% in October to 5.41% in November.
